We started with this, but found the compost to hard to get rid of!!!
The building doesn't look so bad once you get all
of the birds off of the roof, get it cleaned up and get the crates out of the driveway... boy the
wife was happier too!!! LOL
Well that is what we had. Now everything is in my
old show loft.

This is the show loft; 10 feet by 40 feet of hobby bliss for me.
The whole loft with the exception of the hallway is 1"x1" wire
floors so that everything drops to the ground - virtually dust
free. The whole back side is wire on the bottom 18" of the wall
just as you see on the right side in this photo -with hinged
doors of opaque fiberglass.
It is separated into
seven sections inside and two out; they are to the left of the
picture, on the end of the loft; the only pens accessed from
outside. Two of the interior sections on
the right end are split into large individual breeding sections.
Then there is one foster pair section with ten nest compartments on
the far left end. There are also two small individual breeding
compartments for two special show pairs or for weaning.
The middle is made up of
four young birds sections - 5' x 6' each. I plan to add a small
fly pen with a trapping system to the window on the right. This
will go directly into the hallway and to the four young bird
pens. I don't know if I will ever be able to race out of this
set up but at least I can loft fly some young birds. Right now
it is all V-perches but I plan to replace them with the box
perches from the race loft.

This is the former race loft. Slowly being disassembled. I have
already robbed it of the nest boxes for the individuals and the
doors off all the pens. I will also remove the box perches for
the show loft. Eventually the whole thing will just be storage
and the flypens removed and replaced with windows.
This is the view of the three young bird flying sections. There are two to the far left which are 6'x6', you can see the
California style landing boards down on those fly pens. The third pen takes up the whole right front corner and is 8'x10'. Next to that, on the far side of and including the window is a breeding/flying section which houses twelve pair. I plan to add a drop down landing area coming into the bottom half of that window. Opposite of the two 6'x6' section are 12 individual breeding compartments measuring 2'x3' and they are two tiered, one under the other.
This is a view from more in front of the loft. It shows the landing boards and traps a little better.
I plan to replace this fly pen with one of similar design but
made from aluminum tubing. I want to square off the front of the
fly pens and have the birds land and trap on top of the fly
pens. This way the birds can still have access to the fly pens
even while the traps are open. |
