The Big News here at Turned
Luck !!!
07/14/10
- Looks like my whole family of Hollywood/Hofkens
will be gone soon - details to follow later. Ron Deisher sent
Clarity today, she is Cooper's full sister, both out
of the Creator Family Syndicate 3. She is a very nice hen
and will be a great addition to my Creator family. He
also put a full sister to Aphrodidas in the box. She is
almost as nice, just a bit bigger. Another super Creator
hen to add to the stable.
All of the birds that
have been sent to out of area races for me and others are all
still doing well. Also sent several kits out around the country
to be raced by friends. All were very happy with the ybs and all
birds are doing well. Stay tuned for updates.
06/08/10
- A day off and it is rainy and dreary out - bummer. I have
decided on two things concerning the future of Turned Luck
- eliminating one line and setting prices. First I love the
babies coming out of my Creator and Black Widow
matings. Because of that I have decided to eliminate the
Hollywood/Hofkens line. I have always been a huge fan
of this line - I love the way they look, the way they handle and
the way they perform, but space is limited.
The second issue -
pricing! I hate the issue of selling pigeons BUT I have spent
good money on my stock and like my hobby to support itself
somewhat - not support me - I am not in the pigeon business. I
raise birds for myself and sell the extras - I don't breed
pigeons with the intentions of selling. That whole deal is too
stressful and time consuming.
What I have decided to
do is this; any ybs out of any two GFL banded breeders will be
$500 - any ybs out of one GFL banded bird and one non-GFL banded
bird will be $250 - any ybs out of two non-GFL banded birds will
be $100. There will only be two exceptions to this; the first
will be if someone wants to reserve a black, that will be an
additional charge. The second exception will be for proven
breeders or racers, but in all honesty when it is time to sell
them there is a fair chance I will still follow the policy.

- My new job has been crazy!!! Glad to have it
though. My son graduates High School on Wednesday. My little boy
through high school and getting ready for college. Man I am
getting old.... LOL I am proud to say he was 1 of 28 accepted to
Drexel's Architectural Program. Not only accepted but offered a
scholarship.. I am a proud daddy.
Julia's freshman
softball year just ended at HS but the tournament ball is well
under way. She is actually traveling to Oklahoma City for the
College Softball World Series in two weeks. NOT playing YET for
a college but her 14U travel team is playing a tournament there
the same week and it will give them an opportunity to to see the
World Series. She is so excited.
Well the loft is busy
too!! Ramrod and Stewardess have hatched their
second set. Their first set - two black splashes - are turning
out superb!!! After they lay their next set, they will be split
and Stewardess will be mated to Black Powder.
Ramrod may go on Blossom or I may make a Creator
cross. How about some black Creators!!!!
And we also have
Stewardess' grandchildren in the nest - both Shadowed
and First Class have their first hatches under them. Both
sets are a super combo of Black Widow, Aviator and
Sure Bet. I will be offering a few off these pairs this
fall so keep an eye out.
Supremacy and
Diamond's Dollar are on their second set of babies. The
first set is developing nicely for my friend Steve Royer - a
beautiful slate self and blue bar splash. I will take maybe two
more rounds and then Supremacy will go on either
Forbidden Dance or Bleus Dancer for some line bred
Sundancer babies - both are out of Supremacy's half
sister, Creative Dancer who shares the same super dam -
Sundancer.
Diamond's Dollar
will be mated to Cooper to produce some inbred Diamond
Maker babies - they are both Diamond Maker
grandchildren. I can't wait for those ybs!!!!
Because of funds I was
only able to enter six birds in one loft races - sent two to the
Plymouth Peak Pro Challenge and four to the Buckeye Challenge.
All six are doing well. Brad Hoggan really liked the two I sent
to the Plymouth Peak race. I sent a good cross section of my
families. I also sent birds for two other friends so I have a
total of 10 birds out to one loft races.
05/04/10
- Supremacy/Diamond's Dollar have babies and are
back down on eggs. The first set goes to my friend Steve Royer
of Utah. I traded them in a deal to get Forbidden Dance
back to Turned Luck.
Both Black Powder/Lucky
Charm and Ramrod/Stewardess are back down on
eggs. And both of Stewardess' boys, Shadowed and
First Class are down on eggs with their hens.
Could not get birds out
to any more races. My son, Jared was involved in an accident and
totaled out Tahoe. Thanks God he is fine but now my pigeon
budget will be spent on another vehicle for the family. I am
sending more birds to CA to be flown by a friend in his combine.
04/23/10
- Both of the Ramrod/Stewardess
babies are black. They have been moved under fosters and
Ramrod is driving again. I just weaned the ybs from Black
Powder and Lucky Charm and he is driving again.
I also just paired up
the nestmate brothers from Widow's Bet and Stewardess.
First Class is mated to Too Grand - a
granddaughter of Sure Bet and Super Crack 699.
This pulls Sure Bet in from both sides as First Class
is also a Sure Bet grandson. I have Shadowed mated
to Blossom - out of the eight great grandparents in this
mating you have Sure Bet three times, Black Widow
three times and Aviator and Eclipse. WOW!!!!
Sent ybs to the Buckeye
Challenge and Plymouth Peak Pro Challenge on Tuesday. Also have
a partnership with four more birds at the I-Race/Gold. Might
send five more of my own. Next week I am sending a grizzle our
of Diamond's Dollar to the PA Dutch Grizzle Race, a
beautiful little blue bar grizzle hen. Her daddy is Quick
Silver II - a Silver Boy Grandson.
04/14/10
- WE HAVE STEWARDESS BABIES.
Ramrod and Stewardess hatched
out there first set yesterday. And Black Powder
and Lucky Charm's second set are both black !!!! The
Widow's Project is in full swing.
Supremacy and Diamond's Dollar
finally seem to be in love - hopefully fertile eggs will follow
soon.
Looks like we will have Turned Luck YBs
going to at least 5 One Loft and Futurities in either our name
or partnerships. Keep tuned in for details. Follow them on the
One Loft Races page.
04/07/10
- Stewardess'
Granddaughter Scores Big !!! Blue Check Hen W's Kathi,
AU 09 AUB 1648, owned and flown by Paul Watson, Flying W Loft,
Cool, CA was named 2009 DIGEST North American Continental
Awards 1st Sprint Ace Pigeon and 2nd Overall Ace Pigeon Division
6 !!!
03/22/10
- We have Supremacy
and Diamond's Dollar in the an individual right now. Plus
Ramrod and his Aunt Stewardess are mated and
happy. Black Powder and Lucky Charm have just
hatched out there second set so we should have a few of them to
offer soon. Later Black Powder will be mated to his half
sister Stewardess producing double grandchildren of
Black Widow. Stay tuned.
03/16/10
- I wrote about the bad
luck with Bourne, but Mike Ganus came through again and
it gets better each time. I liked Bourne so much I wanted
a full brother. Well Mike couldn't come up with one, so instead
he sent a truly fantastic half brother - a son of Boomerang
and Sundancer. This cock is phenomenal!!!! And out of two
National quality racers. Check out
Supremacy.
I recently, within the last couple weeks, started a
new career with Lowe's and with that, my time is not my own. With this career change and my son going to college in the fall,
my financial situation will be different for awhile. It looks
like I will not be racing from home for a few years. So I will
be reducing my stock loft and concentrating on just a few one
loft/futurity races each year as well as the development of my
Creator, Black Widow and Sure Bet lines. I
will try to have a stock sale every fall on iPigeon. I am not in
the pigeon breeding business so will offer birds at very
reasonable prices.
03/04/10
- Again BadLuck Loft - due to circumstances out of everyone's
control we had to replace Bourne.
01/11/10
-
GREAT NEWS !!!!! This is going to sound
crazy but I have pneumonia and pleurisy. It is great news
because the doctors figured out through this that my lung
problem has been a chronis infection this whole time. Not caused
by the birds just aggravated by them. 28 days of antibiotics and
steroids plus lung treatments and the infection is gone BUT
THE BIRDS STAY !!!!!
01/06/10
- Doubloon's
replacement arrived today and what a bird. I couldn't get a full
brother but Mike did one better. He sent me a son of
Boomerang mated to Diamond Maker. A half brother but
what a half brother!!!!!!

I think we are going to change the name to
BADLuck loft... some time today before I got home from work a
Coopers hawk crashed through one of the glass windows in the
front of the loft. I had just cleaned hem two days before so I
admit it could have been mistaken for an opening in the loft,
but I thought the glass would repel something the size if a
Coopers. He must have really been hauling butt when he hit it. I
found him dead on the floor in the hallway.
Unfortunately that is
not all I found!!! Before the hawk dies he killed Doubloon
and three others, Kitt - a double Rocket
gr'daughter, Okie - an inbred OHF Aarden hen and a sweet
Hofkens hen I bred. Kitt was bad enough, but the loss of
Doubloon is crushing. he was going to be the base of my
Creator family. I have something in the works to replace
him so stay tuned for details.
On a good note, I am
expecting a shipment from my good friend Ron Deisher. He is
sending a pair out of our Widow's Connection mating, a cock out
of our Creator Family Syndicate III pair and a cock out of his
Gabriel and Faith. They won't make up for the loss
of Doubloon but it will cheer me up some. There is also
another Widow's Connection cock on the horizon - a black cock.
More details later.

GREAT NEWS !!!!! I might just be able to
keep a few. Since moving all the birds out to the show loft,
which has wire floors throughout, I have progressively had less
reaction to the birds. It has been almost two months since I
have had a full blown episode. I have also intentionally been
spending more time with the birds to test my lungs and reaction.
So far no more problems.
What does this mean?
Well I have convinced my family to let me keep a few birds. I am
cautious that the cooler weather and the fact that the molt is
over my be big factors so I may not be over this; only time will
tell.
Luckily most of my
Creator birds have not sold - though three key birds are
gone - so I will concentrate on what I have left of them. My
great friend Ron Deisher has agreed to return Doubloon
and Diamond's Dollar. He is also going to provide me with
two more Creator
cocks - one out of our CFS3 pair, Doubloon and
Princess Cut (pictured below). And a second one off of his
import Spierings pair, Gabriel and Faith.
He is also sending back
Black Powder and Stewardess. Returning these birds
will allow me to continue to participate in the Widow's
Connection and Creator Family Syndicate projects.
My plan is to breed from
a few key pair and see how it goes. It is obvious that I will
never be able to go back to my race loft but maybe I can
continue in some capacity from my original show loft - sending a
few birds out to one loft races and possibly selling some kits
and providing a few race kits for friends. I will certainly keep
you posted.
In the meantime I still have lots of good birds that
I need to get rid of.
I must reduce the numbers for sure.
06/02/09
- Princess Cut arrived today. She
will be rested for a few days and then paired with Doubloon.
You can find more details here,
Creator Family
Syndicate.
She is
here and mated to Doubloon

Ron Deisher of PDQ
Racing Loft has been helping me out quite a bit in establishing
my Creator family. I was able to help Ron pick up
Princess Cut and will be splitting some youngsters as a
result. After she has been with Doubloon awhile she will
be headed back to Ron's. We are calling this the
"Creator Family Syndicate". Jim Sears, Steve Royer and
Harold Lamons are also involved. Another collaborative effort to
improve all of our families and provide inbred stock for the
sport.

09/19/08 - I am on my
way to proving my choice of breeders and the quality of my birds
overall! I had 4th equal 1st at the inaugural Buckeye Challenge.
This was only the 130 mile warm-up race but it was our first one
loft entry, so that is one for one scoring. There were five on
the drop and we were 4th through the clock. This youngster is
out of our Sure Bet stock; the sire is Sure Risk.
I hope this is just the "warm-up" for the 250 mile feature race
to be held next Saturday Sept. 26th. Stay tuned and watch the
reports for 47811!!!
09/28/08 -
WOW !!!!!!! We hit again
!!!! We scored 3rd on the Buckeye Challenge Feature
250 with another Sure Bet Family bird; Sure Sweet
is the dam of this one. This time it was 47807. So we
have been in two races and scored twice with two different
birds; not a bad start.
This was a tough smash
250 miler. No birds on the day; only four the second day and one
the third. I am proud to say our 47811, the equal 1st
finisher from the 130 mile race came home Friday; six days after
the release and one of only 6 birds to return. We were the only
loft to have multiple entries return home from the race. Both of
these birds are from our Sure Bet family.
I have added
several more inbred double grandchildren of Sure Bet to
the stock loft. Be on the look out for some fantastic Sure
Bet great grandchildren soon at working man's prices. See
the new breeder's on the
Sure Bet Stock page.
I are also working on a
Vervoort Hofkens family to add to our Hollywood Hofkens.
Plus we discovered that our foundation Hollywood cock,
Lucky Prince carries the recessive red gene. So watch out
for some recessive red Hofkens in the future!!! This may also
include some recessive reds off of Sure Risk !! See the
new breeder's on the Hollywood
Stock page.
